my reason for not eating meat is because of all of the recalls I see on different meat products. So I decided I don't want to risk becoming ill or even to die from food products that have such risks. I also want to stay at a steady weight . After reading some of the recipes they sounded appetizing and healthy. I will also be growing some of my own vegetables in container gardens this year. So, on to a healthier me.

I chose to be a vegetarian for many reasons. I find what drives me the most is just not wanting to be a part of the undignified and frightening industry of meat production in the U.S. We eat far too much meat than we need and in efforts to keep up with our insane demands, animals are being processed and treated like commodities and not living creatures with a right for respect. Not only are these animals subject to a short, stressful and uncomfortable life, but our earth suffers as well. We are all so concerned with reducing our carbon emissions by driving hybrid cars and riding bikes, which is great, but most people don't realize that by just cutting down meat consumption by one day a week would have a tremendous impact on our water and air quality as well as slowing deforestation. Anyway, I am rambling, but whether you choose to eat meat or not, I feel that it is important to take responsibility for ourselves and our planet by seeking out the sources of where our food is coming from and reacting accordingly.

I am limiting the animal products from our diet for several reasons. I am currently trying to lose weight and my body and weight loss seems to like a plant strong diet. I have read much lately about many health problems being linked to meat products so this is an added benefit. I know that food animals are not treated well and although this is not my strongest reason for limiting meat, it definitely adds to my concerns about my diet.

Given the laws of supply and demand in our society, I want to see more retailers offer healthy foods for America's citizens. I have long been economically challenged, like so many of my fellow Americans. I am also aware of the growing need, both for the environment and the health of my family and myself, for a vegetarian, rather than carnivorous, lifestyle. The only way this will happen is if more people eat this way. I don't have the luxury of shopping at the Brattleboro Food Coop, in terms of money or time. I must rely on those stores that cater to other financially challenged families. Despite Wal-Mart's claim to include less junk, and more affordable produce, that's not happening in Hinsdale, N.H.
I also love animals dearly, and have a proud heritage of Native American and French ancestry. Animals were sacred to both of these cultures. I am a meat eater. I want to respect the animals that are my food source, and give them the caring upbringing that the small farmers and Native Americans gave them. Hence, my move to a more vegetarian lifestyle. Given a recent job injury that keeps me from employment, my family could certainly use the prizes you are offering. Thank you.

We have cut back on meat in order to buy higher quality meat - local, grass fed, humanly treated, organic meat. The higher quality meat is actually good for us in reasonable amounts, with higher omega 3's and the cattle being able to eat the food they were meant to eat (among several other reasons). Also, replacing the meat that we used to eat with fruits and vegetables has made a difference in our families health.

I think that the best reason for cutting back on meat is that lessening consumption has so many positive effects:
1. Meat is an expensive protein to buy, especially when feeding a family.
2. Meat involves killing, which is a troubling. Furthermore, mass food production by big farm does not treat animals with the respect and compassion they deserve at any point in their lives.
3. Meat production uses a greater quantity of resources for the amount of food produced in comparison with vegetarian food sources. Hence, producing meat is a greater burden on our environment, and the same resources could feed more in the world if vegetarian sources were chosen.
4. Consuming meat is not the best choice for a heart-healthy lifestyle.
