I move my cutting board to the cooktop, first making sure it's not hot, then turn the range fan on high while I dice the onions, as described above. No more tears.

The candle trick doesn't work; neither does wearing contact lenses! I chopped shallots the other night while wearing my lenses AND burning a candle, and I could barely get the job done. Next time I will try chopping onions while wearing safety goggles. Looking silly for a little bit is fine by me if it reduces the agony!

clean and peel them cith them in half then put them in the frig for 2 hours. Sliver cuts produce the least tears

And to add to this, make sure your knife is sharpe. A dull knife can cause tears in cutting onions as well.

I put a wet sponge next to where I'm going to cut the onions and I don't get any tears...try it...it really works!

Seriously, for years I smart-assedly (that's a word, right?) informed people that I'm just not that sensitive to onions. They don't bother me. I am strong, you are weak. Then I got laser eye surgery, stopped wearing contacts, and no longer can I arrogantly claim onion immunity. Oh well. I guess I'll try the freezer thing.

I can't remember why it works? Something about the chemical reaction in the air space. But burning a candle close by works every time!! :) Swear by it.
