I'm with Phil, in that I also remember when there were no exp dates, and we were required to use common sense...(and our eyes and noses) to determine when something went bad. I also remember one store selling eggs that weren't refrigerated, granted they were on sale and sold fast, but still... I always refrigerate eggs, anyway.
My daughter throws out everything by it's exp date...now she just gives it to me and I eat it and it's just as good as it would've been before. Too bad I can't get everyone to drop their exp food off at my place...I'd never need to go grocery shopping!
The only exp date I adhere to, is milk, because it starts to smell funny by then...sometimes even BEFORE then, and I'm picky about that.

I have a huge phobia of food going past its date I rarely eat it if it goes on the same day I want it!
I also dont no how people can eat a bought cooked chicken the next day when it says eat same day on the label

Yes I do and I have been since I have organic food or no preservative food that last longer than expired date. Milk last almost a week after expired before I either finished it or almost empty when I noticed thick cream like as I know it's expired. My loaf of bread last longer up to 2 weeks because I kept then in dark pantry with air tight.

This article for food expiration is extremely conservative. Milk can be consumed long after it curdles, but it will taste terrible. Cheese will mold on the surface, but underneath it is still safe to eat. Even rotten meat can be eaten if cooked properly, but it won't taste good. Just remember that expired foods must be cooked thoroughly, and mold should never be consumed.

the cookies that my friend gave to me says that it will expire on january 1 2014.. i have eaten my cookies january 3.. do you think its not unsafe??
