Whether hot dog or hamburger really depends on what brands, type and quality of cooking. I'll try to observe type packaging, etc. of the hot dogs. In Chicago we are blessed with many types of super quality dogs and/or sausages. Some are locally made in the ethnic foods plants. So, if I see something that looks like $1 special ball parks, then I'll pass on the hot dog. If I see a great quality like a Vienna, Nathans, Berg or other great sausage, then I'm on to them whether on or off a bun. Also, I'll notice the condiments. If they have only mustard, and, gasp, catsup, then I'm usually put off.
The hamburger, however, depends on the cook since not much can be told if it's pure beef. Obviously, gnarly, over cooked, curled at the edges are an immediate turnoff. But hearing that there's spices, cheese bits, and maybe hot peppers and spices may prompt me towards the burger. Favorite bun for a medium or medium rare burger in toasted rye bread.
So, it depends!
