I grow many of my own veggies that I know I use almost daily in my meals. cilantro and most of the herbs I like to use are rather easy to grow and maintian. The hardes part is getting the garden started but maintaining it is not that time consuming. My favorite nursery carries heirloom tomatoes and the owner and most of the workers are very knowledgeable about safe and green insecticides.
Having my own garden is the most economical and a most sustainable way I know to enjoy organic produce because I am the one who controls how it is grown. One can participaqte in a community garden if you don't have the space to grow your own garden. Grow just a limited number of veggies that are easiest or least time-consuming for you and trade with the other gardeners in your community.

I buy organic as much as possible. I think the extra expense is more than made up in healthier living and fewer doctor bills.

WOW, the fact that corn is on this list pretty much negates the whole thing. The majority of corn grown in the US is genetically modified. I'm not sure which is worse, the pesticides sprayed on or the ones built into the seeds, but I'll spare myself either and go for organic.

Yes i do.I havent given it to much thought organic is just the best way to go..I grow a lot of summer and fall crops but not enough to last all year so i buy orgaic when i can find it.I spend more money on free range eggs. Benny V.

Although I like the idea of buying organic, and do so on rare occasions, I mostly do not buy organic because it is VERY expensive, especially for a family of 4 or more.

Organic buying is becoming just another business, and, I just buy whatever grows around my area without being organic. I don't trust the organic industry with so many labels as certified organic, simply organic, all organic...what does it mean???? At times I buy organic bananas because I enjoy the taste, and at times I also buy organic chicken for the same reason...taste. However, whether or not it is good for you I have my doubts. I do believe that people with food sensitivities must be vigilant about the produce they eat, however, the rest just eat and enjoy....

I only buy non-organic if organic is not available or is of very poor quality. The initial savings don't amount to much if there is a much higher price to pay in terms of the health of our families and the health of our environment.
I save money by not purchasing processed foods, growing some of my own food, preparing my own meals and using everything I buy before it goes bad (no more impulse buying, no throwing things out because have gone bad before they are used or packing the pantry with processed foods bought on impulse). I'm not perfect, and sometimes I miss the mark, but striving to improve produces much better results that looking for an easy way out. It takes discipline, but it's not terribly complicated. Buy the good stuff, cook your own meals and use everything you buy.
You not only are what you eat, you are what the things you eat have been fed -- in conventional farming situations, plants are typcially fed on fertilizers made from petroleum products. Conventional plants that have been genetically modified (they aren't always marked as such) may have pesticides incorporated as part of their DNA -- you can't wash that off. Some plants have been bred or genetically modified to have reduced levels of Omega 3 fatty acids. "Novel" chemicals and geneically modified plants may seem safe now, but it will take many years to determine long term consequences to humans and by then it's too late -- the damage has been done.

Yes- I try to buy my fruits and vegetables from organic markets. As I juice a lot of these products (daily) my consumption is large and I worry about pesticides ( GMO’s, BGH, BST’s and the like). Milk, eggs, honey, fruits and vegetables make up 70% of my diet and seafood most of the rest. Since I do not spend money on expense meat cuts I think I am actually saving on food purchases compared to 10 years ago when I was not concerned with what I brought in markets.

I try to buy organic whenever possible. I buy my vegetables and fruits organic. I purchase meat from a local farmer who raises his own cattle. I would prefer to spend more money for something that is better for me in the long run. .
