I was shocked to read that you claim to not be able to taste salt when it's added to pasta water. Salting pasta water makes an enormous difference in the flavor of the cooked pasta, and eliminates the need to add salt after the pasta is cooked. I would never serve pasta that wasn't cooked in salted water - adding salt after cooking does not have the same effect on flavor. The real problem with the American diet is that people eat too much processed food, which contains way too much sodium. If you cut out some processed food (crackers, frozen meals, canned soup, etc.) from your diet, you probably don't have to worry about the (small amount of) sodium that comes from salted pasta/potato/rice water.

I love brown rice unsalted, ever try brown jasmine rice YUM! When the salt is gone the natural flavor of the food can come through. I do use salt though, love it, I just don't use much.
I agree with the article and I believe in many principals of the "raw diet" when food is cooked it kills the enzymes that are so benificial to our bodies, couldn't tell you the last time I cooked veggies...hmm wait I made chili last night. I used several tomatoes and peppers in that. I did however use the chili as dressing for my salad though.
My salt...Garlic powder and pepper; I use a lot.

I like the idea of "if you can't taste it, don't add it", this is contary to what I was taught, we always added seasonings so that they would be "cooked into the food". I, too would like to see more about natural sugar alternatives. When it comes to oatmeal, I add a little soymilk after it is cooked. For me, this eliminates any need for salt. Also, it might sound a little strange, but powdered ginger really spices this up. No salt needed.

Years ago, I was put on a HC,HP,Lf diet for Typhoid Fever and Yellow Jaundice (yes, I was VERY sick). I was 14. All food had to be boiled, with no salt or condiments. I was too sick to care what food tasted like, and had no appetite to eat, anyway. I never learned to use salt because of this, until I married a person who salts everything as if he owns the salt flats. If I say the word salt, I retain water, so I'm blessed with not needing it. My spouse is not bothered with salt intake, as our doctor explained. We can all get used to what we HAVE to do, if it is a matter of life and death. No salt for me, a lot for him. The salt shaker is on the table for whomever needs it. If my food tastes bland, it beats attending my funeral, although I use herbs, etc as suggested, and major salt use is not needed, even for company. This is only my situation; I don't speak for any other person or family.

Just wondering why rice has to taste salty to be good! I never have used salt, cooking brown rice, or anytype of rice. I use Herbs. Fresh or Dried. I mostly use, Garlic, and Herbes De Provence. Of course it depends on what your using the rice for. There are fresh veggies you can add instead of salt also for flavor. A teaspoon of regular salt, has twice as much sodium as a teaspoon of kosher salt. If your going to salt your food,salt right before serving. You will be saving allot of sodium in your diet.

Cooked oatmeal is barely edible without a little salt in the water. Sea salt works great in place of table salt.

I disagree with suggestion #1... there is no way you will ever get rice to taste salty enough if you don't salt the water.
