The new zero-calorie sweetener--is it safe?

Brierley asks: Tell us why you do--or don't--use artificial sweeteners.

I try not to use "artificial*" sweeteners simply because I do not trust them OR the Agency that says they are safe. This is SAD because I am a retired FDA employee! HOWEVER, people should not, as one commenter did, blame the FDA. They should look at the people in CONGRESS who control policy and funding of agencies.

IF you want PROTECTION from the FDA, then Congress must get its hands off policy AND fund the Agency properly.

If you are one of the 20-25% of Americans who scream for "less government," "smaller government" REMEMBER that when there is contaminated tuna fish, poisoned pain meds, defective medical devices, fatal side effects from drugs, or pet foods that kill your beloved furry friends!

The people who work for the FDA are, for the most part, intelligent, caring, knowledgeable, diligent and DEDICATED to your health and well being. DO NOT blame them!

* the American public has been led to believe that "natural" is better/safer than "artificial" or man made. This is NOT necessarily true! Nature is full of toxic substances! STOP believing advertising and start thinking for yourselves!

100% Stevia is great and hasn't caused any bad side effects for me. When I was using any stevia that had sugar alcohols added to it like Truvia, I was getting headache and stomach aches. Wished I would have figured that out a long time ago, because I suffered needlessly for months. These are some of the names of sugar alcohols that are on labels:
malitol, sorbital, isomalt, mannitol,
xylitol, lactitol, erythritol,
hydrogenated starch hydrolysates,
HSH (commonly labeled as Lycasin™)
and hydrogenated glucose syrups.

I have been using liquid stevia in coffee and tea for over 10 years. It was recommended because I have migraines and artificial sweetners are a no-no. I am a true believer and carry it with me.

You're casting some doubt on Stevia's safety, have you looked at research on the harmful effects of sucralose?

I had awful gas w/stevia. I can't use any sugar substitutes because they all give me gas. I also have bloating w/them. My mom has no problem w/them. I wish I could use them. I guess the best thing would be to not do sugar.

I haved used stevia for years with no problems, and no aftertaste of the artificial ones, and the effects that are found out later, be careful stevia is very sweet.

I personally will never use another artificial sweetener! One of them gave me a severe allergic reaction that has left me crippled for life! I do not trust the FDA when it comes to keeping all foods safe.
