The dangerous ingredient you’re eating—and don’t even know it

Gretel asks: Do you avoid foods because they contain palm oil? Which ones?


I have been boycotting all my favorite cookies and everything else that contains palm oil. This means just about all candybars, pastries and other treats. It's digusting!!!

the problem is.. is that I cant stop eating it till the entire jar is gone!!!!!!!

To my knowledge I do not eat foods with palm oil but I would stop eating any food with that as an ingredient mainly because of the harm palm nurseries have on the environment.

So I suppose you are going to tell use coconut oil is unhealthy too? The only reason I avoid palm oil is reason #3.

Nutella, is a standard breakfast element here in Belgium. To most, they give this for breakfast with bread and orange juice on a daily basis. Why?? can't say, I am an American living here for many years and I have seen that "Nutella" is becoming more popular in the U.S., my advice is don't. I prefer to give, either cereal, fruit or even eggs and toast for breakfast. I like the idea of diversity, ok you can have Nutella every now and then. Parents need to have an open mind, our children these days need all the best nutrients they can have and most cases prefer not to give them extra 'fats' that are unhealthy. I, thank you for your review, as I have seen children here not eat anything else but... all the time, they are not great believers in cereal nor ham and eggs, so for me, having a bigger spectrum is beneficial to our children's eating habits.

Saturated fat isn't the issue with Nutella -- it's the fact that the #1 ingredient is sugar and the fact that they market their product (at least in the US) as a healthy food on par with oatmeal and bananas for breakfast.

No, palm oil is really not a major inhibitor to me. Much more dangerous than oils are the toxic chemicals which we have used for years to clean our dinnerware---that's right....dtergents with fragrances in them. Moreover, those detergents are made from oil waste from petroleum processing, hence the NEED for those manufacturers to add fragrances(also made form chemical and pertoleum WASTE): to cover up the chemical smell of their products, which no one would buy if they knew how bad they smelled without the fragrances. Same is true for detergents, fabric softeners, air "fresheners, scented candles, and cleaning products. We stopped using that garbage on our dinner plates, and now use only vegetable based surfactant soaps(like 7th Generation) and we only subscribe to magazines that advocate actual healthy lifestyles(like Eating Well) which do NOT accept advertisements from companies which produce unhealthy products. You cannot rust labels...but the MSDS sheets are a treasure trove of real info...the companies HAVE to know how toxic their products are...but they keep selling them. And people are often too unmotivated to fing out. Makes me laugh really...they'll jog, drink plenty of water from a bottle, and claim to eat organic foo...but they won't give up their scented products...which are linked to real cancers and respiratory illnesses. Sorry if I hi-jacked the blog, but I mean, really!!! Palm oil?
