Hi there - I love sardines. I live in italy, currently, and we can even get fresh sardines. They are great off the grill. Sometimes they also show up in the frozen food section. Unprocessed (eg canned) is even better! They have a special taste (some people might need to get accustomed to, do not smell or taste very fishy.

I eat sardines right out of the can. When I was young, my grandmother use to open a can at night while watching TV and we would share them. Never ate them any other way.

Hilary, As a child, I used to watch my dad make sardine sandwiches with sliced onions, and remember the awful smell. Since I learned how healthy they are for you, I do eat them once in a while. l eat them with shrimp sauce to hide the taste. Last week I tried mixing miracle whip with the sardines, (I take out the bones) and spread it on whole wheat bread. It was ok; I just need to experiment a little more. The next time I will add dyjon mustard and diced onions to the miracle whip, which I do when I make tuna or salmon salads. I look forward to reading more suggestions from your readers.

You can make a delicious sardine sandwich with mashed sardines and thousand island dressing. Use as much or as little of the dressing as you want, for a consistency you prefer on rolls, French bread, toast, etc.

My other favorite is sardines mixed and flaked with hot buttered rice. Serve broccoli or carrots (or both) with sesame oil on the side. Add any Asian topping to the rice mixture, if desired. Years ago, when we were a family of four, would often do this with a large can of mackerel, instead of a small can of sardines!
