I try to use honey for sweetner in yogurt which I buy the plain organic yogurt; I then drain the water from it and sweeten with honey or fruit juice. I use turbino sugar in baked goods and top some fruits with a sprinkle if needed. I try not to consume foods with HFCS because I have read that it "spikes" the blood sugar rapidly and falls rapidly, where honey has a slower rise in BS and slow fall which keeps blood sugars at a more even level. Is this acurrate? If not I will still continue to use honey for flavour, I just really like it! There are other benefits in consuming honey.

I occasionally use Splenda or sugar when baking, but have drastically reduced my intake of sugar.
I avoid HFCS because I developed an allergy to corn and all foods corn related due to my overuse of foods containing HFCS. Most processed food uses HFCS. My allergist did tests to confirm this.
By removing most sugars or processed sweetened foods from my life recently, I am able to lose weight for the first time in a long time. I also don't crave sweets like I used to.

I have been using Splenda for several years now. I was told by a co-worker that Splenda has some serious side effects so I researched it and found out that people have had different side effects that I have also experienced using Splenda. I stopped using splenda 4 days ago and some of my symptoms have gone away and some have subsided some. The side effects that I experienced is excessive bloating, upset stomach and muscle aches. The bloating feeling is getting better, I have no more muscle aches and I have not had an upset stomach since I stopped using Splenda. Do you have any infomation about Splenda that can support this?

HIGH FRUTOSE SWEETNER IS IN EVERYTHING!!!! LITERALLY EVERYTHING. I CANNOT EAT IT AND IF I EAT SOMETHING THAT HAS IT IN IT, I KNOW RIGHT AWAY. IT IS WAY TOO SWEET. IT IS ALMOST A SICKENING SWEET. I DO NOT ACTUALLY USE SUGAR EXCEPT IF I BUY A PRODUCT THAT HAS SUGAR IN IT. IF IT DOES I WANT NATURAL SUGAR - NOT A MANMADE CHEMICAL. I MUST CONFESS I DO USE SOME SPLENDA IN MY COFFEE BUT ONLY IN THE MORNING. I JUST REALLY THINK THAT WE (AMERICAN) CONSUME WAY TOO TOO MUCH SUGAR ESPECIALLY HIGH FRUTOSE SWEEETNER. IT WILL KILL US ALL.

I've been using agave syrup for a while now but a friend just sent me new information telling me that agave does not work any different than HFCS or sugar. Even when they might not that good to use, I don't do articial sweeteners,( correction: my protein shake has 1g of sucralose and I take that once a day) for any of my drinks or meals, I guess for me agave is still the best choice, although I've now noticed that everything I consume already has sugar.

I use Xylitol made from birch tree bark available from emeraldforestsugar.com. Unlike "other sweeteners," including sugar, honey, HFCS, agave nectar, stevia, etc., Xylitol does not feed cancer. It has many other major health benefits and NO adverse side effects. One point: it is strictly for humans - not other living creatures.
Ms. Edelbaum, I suggest you and Barry Popkin, PhD., do the research and check it out. All sweeteners are NOT alike, either calorically or affecting health.

please don't forget that HFCS is made with corn that has been genetically modified, which makes it a WHOLE lot worse than sugar. i'm surprised that this is not part of your article. please share as many facts as are available so people can make an educated choice. thankyou

Outside of avoiding sweeteners, especially the artificial variations, there isn't much choice except for plain old sugar. When I choose to indulge I much prefer the more natural alternative rather that stoking my body with artificially made sweeteners. Honey, yes I use it, love it, sometimes crave it, especially when I indulge in waffles, pancakes or a piece of homemade cake. Is it better than sugar, I'm not convinced. In short, I watch what I eat, treat sugar as a special treat and don't worry about it too much.
