Is agave nectar healthier than sugar or other sweeteners?

Brierley asks: What natural sweeteners do you like to use?


I love Stevia Extract but Truvia has so many chemicals in it that it is no better for you than artificial sweeteners. Then there are some that are pure but have alcohol in them. I finally found just plain Stevia Liquid Extract at Swanson's and since me and my husband are diabetic we use it religiously. I also love the Agave Nectar for my pancakes and some other things but it has a different taste that I do not like in my tea and koolaid. The agave tastes like a cross between syrup and honey to me. They are both wonderful for the right food or drink and are better for you than sugar if you are diabetic. S L Eiland

I really like monk fruit sweetener for coffee/tea. A few drawbacks: It's somewhat expensive and sold in small packages, so it's not ideal for baking.

Given the extreme-bad health implications of agave, being primarily high fructose corn syrup, and the fact that the comments aren't directly readable from this page, this post should be removed from the site.

At this point it's simply unethical to continue to show this page.

Agave = high fructose corn syrup, so unless you think HFCS is good for you then agave is a terrible for your health.

Don't believe it, Google "is agave high in fructose".

Don't eat agave nectar. I did and, I will admit I used a lot, however I didn't even drink half of the slushy that I made. In less then 30 minutes my stomach was bubbling up. I research into agave more and to my surprise the stuff is horrible and being promoted as healthy alternative to sugar. Or healthy because it has a lower GI. I poured it out after reading. The best thing I know to do is use fruits, unrefined sugar, molasses or honey in low levels. We this day in age are addicted to too much sugar. As you wean yourself off and eat more vegetables you won't want your food to be so sugary sweet anymore.

I've been doing a lot of reading about the harmful effects of sugar, HFCS, fructose, and artificial sweeteners like Splenda, etc. They will all spike your insulin and cause you to gain belly fat, even though the artificial sweeteners may not add calories. I switched to Truvia and Stevia, having read that these will not spike your insulin and cause belly fat. So far (6 months), I have had a much easier time maintaining and/or quickly losing the 1-2 lbs. that I might gain, so I believe that the Truvia and Stevia have helped a lot. Judy K.

The only time I ever used agave nectar was in hot coco last year thats it ! Otherwise I do not use natural sweeteners.

I love agave! I bake with it, cook with it, use it in cold and hot drinks - everything!! Awwwemazing! I refuse to use white sugar anymore!
