Unfortunately the author and website (Eating Well) are following the American way and sensationalizing juicing vs smoothies. The article is basically full of crap and dead wrong. Neither one or the other is "better" for you, your mileage will vary depending on your current health condition and what you are trying to achieve.
Both are better for you than neither, but like anything else, too much of anything, even 'good" things can be bad for you. Talk to your doctor and ignore these crap articles by "nutritionist" trying to make a name for themselves.

WHEN YOU MENTIONED JUICING YOU THE OLD FASHION WAY WHICH I DON'T BELIEVE MANY PEOPLE DO ANYMORE.
WHEN PEOPLE ARE TALKING JUICING THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT LIKE THE SUPER FOODS WITH THE NUTRI BULLET / NINJA WHOLE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT THIS ARTICLE WAS ABOUT UNTIL I READ IT OVER AGAIN.
THOSE TWO SMOOTHIE COMPARISONS WOULD BE A SOME GOOD READING

Using a Blendtec is making a smoothie. A Blendtec is not a juicer. I cured my overactive bladder with regular juicing but I also made smoothies in my Blendtec. My partner lost 20 lbs and healed his bad knees and bad back with a 30 day juice fast followed by a 30 day smoothie fast. We are under the care of a naturopathic doctor. I have never heard of limiting smoothie intake. Especially if you stay away from the dairy and only use fruits and vegies.

Which is better depends on the purpose. Cow dairy is not a good ingredient.

I can drink pure veggie juice. However I like blending a frozen banana and or an avocado in my juice. I like it both ways.

What about "juicing" but doing so in a BlendTec, where you consume the pulp and fiber as well, Nothing is "wasted" I mix it up by doing "whole juice" one day then a smoothie the next. I do not have a juice extractor, only my BlendTec which "juices" the whole food, including pulp to a liquid. We bought this blender specifically because it does not work in the same way a normal juice extractor does.

With smoothies the fiber is there but with large amounts of fiber, it is hard to digest that and it may upset the stomach until one is used to it. The juice doesn't make the fiber (though one can mix it and dehydrate it into crackers or chips and eat the fiber that way). The juice does give readily soluble veggies though that are easily digested and may give someone who doesn't eat many veggies or fruits a nice bit of veggie and juice to get more than a minimum supply. Juices, especially with juice in it will have sugar. The smoothie is more palatable with yogurt which is a milk product although there may be some vegan products comparable.
