Got a hangover? Eat this…

I am a graduate of a university that is almost always near the top of the lists of binge-drinking schools. Needless to say, I’ve had my share of hangovers. and I’ve tried my share of hangover cures to help me get to class. One of my friends who was a nursing student told me that her professor swore by a bowl of chicken soup, a glass of milk and a Snickers bar to cure a hangover. (Everyone seems to have an opinion, right? Take our quiz to see how much you know about hangovers.) It turns out her professor might’ve been onto something. Just in time for the party season, I offer you a few food cures that may help you get over your hangover a bit quicker.

Eat or drink some fruit—One study conducted in the 1970s found that drinking fruit juice or eating fruit relieved some hangover symptoms. Fruits and fruit juices contain a sugar called fructose, which may help your body clear alcohol faster, according to the National Institutes of Health. Fruits and vegetables (think: supposed tomato juice “cures”) also contain minerals, such as potassium, that are important in restoring your electrolyte balance and replenishing your body’s fluids. Eat Chocolate & Banana.

Eat some starchy carbs—(I know, you were waiting for validation that this one’s OK.) Starchy carbohydrates, such as toast or crackers, may help to counteract nausea and low blood sugar (symptoms include headaches, fatigue and cold sweats) caused by long bouts of drinking with little food, according to an article in the journal Alcohol Health & Research World. Whip up a loaf of Honey Oat Quick Bread.

Drink more fluids—Duh. Drinking alcohol causes your body to lose a lot of water, especially if you’ve been sick to your stomach. Rehydrating—with water or sports drinks that contain electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium—could help you feel better. Try a Citrus Berry Smoothie.

Down some electrolytes—The salt and potassium in bouillon-based soup may replace lost electrolytes, relieving some of the symptoms of dehydration: headache, weakness, dizziness. Try a bowl of Vegetable Lover's Chicken Soup.

Catch a buzz—Not that kind of buzz. I mean caffeine, which can help relieve that “jet lag” feeling. Coffee, please!
