Diet or Exercise: What's the Best Way to Lose Weight?

Wow. This is a terrible article. While I agree that diet is primarily responsible for weight loss or gain, that does not in any way diminish the importance of exercise. Exercise is vital for overall health, immune function, metabolism (via lean muscle mass), and to help prevent a host of age related physical and cognitive declines. I am not that familiar with Eating Well magazine, having just discovered it at my local co-op, but this article has caused me to rethink my plan to get a subscription.

ThIs absolutely has been the case for me. I've lost 75 pounds on Weight Watchers in less than one year., just about 2 pounds a week. When I started I could not walk around the block. I would never have lost the first pound had I not been encouraged to focus on my diet.

I bought a food scale, learned portion control, tracked my food intake and lost the first 40 pounds without leaving the couch. I then was encouraged to add exercise bit by bit, and started with ten minute walks, three times a day. Gentle activity that relieved stress.

I now walk five miles a day, and I don't worry if I don't do it all at once. I look forward to exercise instead of hating it . I see exercise as stress relief, not an excuse to eat more, and I count my dog walks, walks to the store instead of taking the car, and busy part time job in a deli as part of my activity.

The motto 'Lose weight in the kitchen, not in the gym' rings true to this 55- year old woman.

This article caught my attention. I agree with the calorie intake must be less. The exercise is important for the maintenance and sustaining your weight loss

Exercising is the best way to lose weight.It is so because sometimes we follow a very strict plan of dieting an it harms our body and sometimes we don't even follow the diet plan.So exercising is good at least you will not harm your body.Follow easy weight loss exercises at home and you are saved from the cost of payments to the gym

I agree...exercise to lose weight never made sense to me. Exercise for good health is a differed story.

I disagree with only cutting calories to lose weight. What happens to a 1200 calorie diet ? You shouldn't go under 1200 calories , so how do you cut calories then?

This is the stupidest article I have ever read. As the people before me mentioned, exercise is very important for building muscle, which in turn does burn more calories. In addition, severe calorie restriction and no exercise will lead to muscle loss. Of course, by your definition, that will translate into weight loss, but losing muscle is not by any means good!

Providing references in this case would be an excellent idea. And critically reading the entire science articles is a good idea as well.

Very interesting studies. Definitely food for thought. The studies do seem to show what you put in your body will effect your overall weight. Incorporating activity into your weekly regime will contribute to your overall health. -Tammy-Lynn McNabb , Host www.Healthradio.fm
