6 unexpected heart-healthy snacks

Brierley asks: What are your favorite heart-healthy foods?


As I was reading this I was finishing my bowl of turmeric popcorn. I like it better than parmesan cheese and turmeric helps protect against cancer. Instead of sprinkling cheese on the popcorn, try turmeric. My other favorite is Breyer's Yeast - you might want to transition from the cheese with this and then move over to the turmeric when you are ready for a change. Both are yummy. I also use a pump spray to add a light coat of olive oil that is very satisfying.

This is great, these are foods I eat almost everyday. My father had two heart attacks by the time he was 60. Now, tell me why icecream can be good for me! I really love this website, can't afford the magazine subscription right now, so this allows me to try to eat better and feed my family a more nutritious diet. I am very happy how my body is shaping up – it looks firmer, my posture is improved, and I feel more in shape. My husband and son both commented that they really see the difference. What my favorite heart healthy are trail mix. I think that this is a heart healthy food because it contains fruit nut and other kinds of things, Also it helps me get energy and makes me healthy and stronger.

Hi Brierley,

I also suffer from high cholesterol and other heart problems, and like your husband, have become conscious of eating heart-healthy foods. This is a very interesting list which can at least introduce some variety and fun into a heart-healthy diet. One of the interesting points you raise is the link between gum disease and heart health; something everyone at risk should be aware of. Brush, floss and have regular cleanings at the dentist --- something I personally have neglected over the years.

My personal favorite heart-healthy snacks include hummus and salsa on Wasa bread; dried mangos (I love any dried fruit!); I love grapes, and then finally, and a bowl of heart healthy high-fiber cereal with soy-milk.

A lot of people think avocados are bad for you but they are the super fruit for the heart....

I love Yogurt. I am not a fan of 'light' or fat free yogurts. They're just not a natural whole food. I like to add fresh fruit, nuts, and granola or a crunchy good Kashi to my yogurt. It's a great snack and a satisfying breakfast as well.
