5 things in your kitchen that could make you sick

Nicci asks: What do you do to keep your kitchen and your food safe?


Another tip is to never wipe down your counters with your dish cloth/sponge. I buy handiwipes - they are great. I use a spray cleaner to spray the counter and wipe with handiwipes. I have a little towel rack that hangs on the door below the sink...I hang the handiwipe there to dry (it's on the inside so when I close the door no one sees it) Haniwipes have little holes in them which is good. I use one for about a month, then use a new one. They come 3 to 4 in a pkg and are cheap enough. As for my dish never touches actual food bc I rinse and brush off all my dishes before washing using a dish brush that is on a handle. I put dish soap in the dishpan and put hot water in. It makes a lot of suds. There is NEVER any food in my dish soap. I can't understand people that put dishes with a little bit of food or sauce on them, in the dish pan. To me that would be like taking a bath when you're full of mud, then washing yourself in that very same water. NOT CLEAN. Anyway, my dish cloth is only used for dishes and never to wipe down counters. I wash them and the dish towels in hot water and bleach. :)

I never use a sponge. I always use a dish cloth, that gets washed and changed very regularly. My fridge stays so cold, it's not unusual to find things starting to freeze, so I do keep that really cold. I always wash my cutting boards with soap and water and if they've touched raw meat, they bleach added to them. I'll let them soak in the bleach/water mixture for awhile, then wash them, then toss them into the dishwasher. As for raw eggs, if I'm baking, I use pasteurized egg whites. You can buy them in the egg section. They are sold in a carton. Not the Egg Beaters, those are just nasty and full of chemicals. The ingredients should read with only two words: Egg Whites. I started using them when our grandson was about 2 1/2 as I wanted him to be able to experience the joy of eating cooking dough and licking the beaters when making a cake. He's almost 10 know and he knows and understands that if anything is made with raw eggs, do "not" eat or sample it. As for recalled items, I'm signed up with the USDA/FDA so I receive emails on a regular basis for anything on recall. Whether it's a medication or a food item, I'm aware of it. So, I think I keep my family pretty safe. Even when people are sick, I use Lysol and I have been known to wash everything in hot bleach water.

When I do the dishes, I clean the sink first and then pour a pot of boiling water all over it. After I wash all the dishes and cutlery, I pour a boiling pot of water over the cutlery especially the prongs of forks where they tend to blacken with who knows what. I'm a freak when it comes to cleanliness. I also pour a boiling pot of water over my green scrubbing pads and throw them out after a few days. I also use cleansing cloths with bleach to wipe the door handles of the fridge, the knobs on the stove and microwave oven pad, the phone and light switches. I also do this to the door knobs to the entrance way as they get touched alot. I clean my plastic dish drainer with hot soap and water and then pour a pot of boiling water over it as well as it sits under the sink and gathers moss (or something like it). I also clean the area under the sink with a very strong disinfectant and lots of hot water.
