5 Food Myths Busted: Grocery shopping mistakes that are costing you money and quality

Carolyn asks: What food myth would you like to see busted?


Not all farmers market foods are local and not all their food is organic. Some farmer's are using pesticides and herbicides in growing their food. The Farmer's market allows you to talk to the farmer and make the determination whether or not you should buy. Find the ones you like and buy their produce.

I would like to find bread that does not have soy in it. almost impossible outside of a heath food store, even then it is a challange.
any advice?

Interesting... growing up on the farm we had white hens laying brown eggs???? Never got close enough to see earlobes without getting pecked at.
I get brown eggs from the local farmer and can honestly tell you the flavour of the brown eggs far surpasses the store bought white egg.

Myth I want busted... have seen much controversy around consuming eggs. Old thought is maybe one egg weekly. Now info states daily consumption is actually good for you and does not elevate cholesterol.
Heard many years ago the original studies were done on rabbits - natural vegetarians. Conclusion was eggs were not good for you, recently the studies were done on different subjects.

Please bust the myth that irradiated foods are radioactive or cause birth defects or cause cancer or.....
True things you should know: Astronauts eat irradiated food (less chance of food poisoning), food irradiation works in ways similar to the way microwave ovens work, and spices have been irradiated for eons.

Fresh vegetables are always more economical than frozen ones. It takes more energy resources to produce frozen vegetables that have to be shipped on cold trucks. It is much better (economically and for your health) to eat fresh, local produce.

I've always thought raw veggies were categorically better. Now I read that tomatoes and spinach (for example) are more nutritious when lightly cooked because the nutrients are more available for absorption in the body. Is this true?
