3 reasons you should reach for canola oil when you’re cooking

Brierley asks: What oil do you cook with?


I have a friend who has kidney stones and she has to watch the oxalate content of the foods she eats. Can you help me recommend a healthy menu of things she might be able to eat.

I started useing EVOO, but after reading your article, I'm going to add canola oil to my cooking routine. I also use stray products, both when cooking & bakeing. I've been trying to lose weight & have no teeth, so when my doctor tells me to 'eat more raw fruits & veges', I just smile my toothless grin & say 'How?' I do eat lots of veges (steamed) & soft fruits (I would SO love to bite into an apple!) & in place of butter, I use the spray kind. I'm also disabled, have trouble walking & it's been recemmoned that I have weight lse surgery. I need to lose 130 lbs & this is the only way I'm going to be able to do it. What kind of a diet can you recommend that's not all liquid, after surgery?

I cook with canola oil and virgin olive oil, I have been using these oils for years, I read along time ago that ithese oils are heart healthy and that is what I am trying to maintain. I am a healthy 60 year old with alot of life left.

I use extra-virgin olive oil for my salad dressings and where I need the flavor of the olive oil. For frying I use canola oil. I also use sesamy oil in oriental dressings. I use butter, olive oil and canola oil in baking treats. We are of the opinion that it's better to have a little bit of the real thing that tastes great than a lot of something that tastes less than optimal. I use a lot of recipes with reduced butter content or part of butter substituted for canola, of course, but I wouldn't make a recipe again if it had the right fat but not pleasing the palate. For example, the apple sauce substitute doesn't work well in my opinion, canola oil based muffins work a lot better than the apple sauce ones. Well, I don't eat flour products any more, but when I did, I liked canola muffins better.

I cook with Olive Oil and Canola Oil. I use Smart Balance in cookies. Are they safe as Canola? My husband has coronary artery disease.

I also use Walnut oil.

Olive oil for general use.
I grease pans for baking with Omega Nutrition's organic coconut oil (it does not taste like coconut)

I have been using Canola Oil for cooking and Olive Oil for salads etc., however, my husband just recently brought home coconut oil. I am skeptical, is this oil healthy?

When frying foods, which I don't do often, I will use Olive Oil. When baking I use Canola Oil. For salad dressings, I use Olive Oil. Once in a while I will use Vegetable Oil when I'm out of Canola Oil.
