I hate to say it, but there is no taste difference between organic or non-organic produce.

Pesticides are poison! Thank you so much for your comments. The only thing is: we can wash off "the residue", but we can't wash off the pesticide that is put directly into the very DNA of the seed! The viruses and pesticide, and now pharmaceuticals, are all through the plant - and the part that we eat! Now these GMO plants kill all of the good bacteria that goes into our earth, and takes out the nitrogen - the basic element we need in our bodies! Man, is it madening! To be afraid of the food that is in the supermarkets and having to worry about what food to eat, is absolutely horrible and immoral! Yes! Organic food is expensive and that is a pain! There has to be a balance: even if we just have a night or two of "Just Good Healthy Stuff", or even grow (can grow in small areas and this site has some great suggestions) Organic potatoes, carrots, or even throw some onions in the dirt: some things you use alot and can be stored for several months at a time, Just BE CREATIVE! Humane treatment of animals is my primary driver to organic purchases....when you buy organic you are voting at the checkout for the farmer and better treatment of animals. I eat a mostly vegetarian diet, however, I buy organic milk and eggs. The vast majority of consumers I suspect either do not know or either turn a blind eye to what is really going on.

I NEVER go by looks or taste for food choices. The most lush display of fresh local produce I ever saw at farmers market was highest in pesticides. Abused, chemical ridden, unnaturally fed animals (factory farmed) are often the tastiest. Farmed salmon looks and tastes great- you would never know the cramped cesspool it was raised in or the revolting shade of gray it would be without chemical coloring. I buy organic produce, humanely and sustainably raised meats, cage free eggs, serve more beans, brown rice, quinoa, fruits, veggies... less meat. Why should the food that is meant to sustains our lives and develop our children's brains and bodies be cheap, only appear to be good, and and cause mass suffering of animals? I buy organic because I know GMOs are not safe. Certified organic = non-Gmo. I also dont want to feed my family poisons and thats what the pestisides are. When you call it what it is "poison" its much easier to pay the higher prices for safe organic foods.I remind myself when looking at the cost differences"" You can pay now or you will pay later with poor health." The only things I dont purchase organic have thick removable skin(oranges,bananas,avocados) AND are on the non-gmo list. I also buy organic ketchup and other condiments because I dont want high fructose corn syrup. I ALWAYS buy organic milk and I make my own yogurt from it. If I had unlimited money I would buy everything 100% organic .

I find the way that you present this information dangerous. It scares people into thinking they are better off not buying fresh fruits and vegetables if they are not organic. Also, making blanket statements like organics are better for the environment is an oversimplification and sometimes flat out wrong. Organic pesticides are regularly used in greater quantities and more applications than non-organic pesticides. There are also systems approaches learned from biodynamic farming methods (much more sustainable than simple "organic" farming) that have been incorporated into some non-organic farming operations. EWG data does not identify sources of samples. To always assume organics are safer and healthier is a shortcut to thinking.

Thanks for letting us know that there is an update on the list! I love that they came up with this and it is great to know that they do continue to check and reevaluate periodically. Our family really values our health and choosing whole foods that can help our bodies. We eat lots of fruits, veggies and drink only water through the day (aside of our one cup of OJ in the morning). We also take our daily Vidazorb chewable probiotic to help our bodies to digest and process all the nutrients for the best possible health! We love the lifestyle changes we have begun - it feels great! :)

Know your farmer. Join a CSA or shop at a farmer's market. There are many farmers who do not use pesticides or other chemicals, but are not certified organic.

I have just completed a lifestyle challenge transformation project for my Intro to Medicine class (Hcom 504 Tufts) and found many reasons to and not to buy organics. Main reason to buy organics no pestacides and antibiotics and to eat healthier. All someone needs to do is watch Food Inc. and they will prefer to eat organic chikens and beef. I know my 9 year old does. Although some studies state no nutitional differences, but it brought my family in to talking about healthy choices and making them. Reasons not to buy organics the COSTS. For a family of five milk alone could cost $20.00 more a week. Also some of the local supermarkets have a very limited choice of organics. I must admit I like the organic wine without sulfites better than conventional wine and am willing to pay $3.00-$5.00 more a bottle. txs, Amy
