Humane treatment of animals is my primary driver to organic purchases....when you buy organic you are voting at the checkout for the farmer and better treatment of animals. I eat a mostly vegetarian diet, however, I buy organic milk and eggs. The vast majority of consumers I suspect either do not know or either turn a blind eye to what is really going on.

Pesticides are poison! Thank you so much for your comments. The only thing is: we can wash off "the residue", but we can't wash off the pesticide that is put directly into the very DNA of the seed! The viruses and pesticide, and now pharmaceuticals, are all through the plant - and the part that we eat! Now these GMO plants kill all of the good bacteria that goes into our earth, and takes out the nitrogen - the basic element we need in our bodies! Man, is it madening! To be afraid of the food that is in the supermarkets and having to worry about what food to eat, is absolutely horrible and immoral! Yes! Organic food is expensive and that is a pain! There has to be a balance: even if we just have a night or two of "Just Good Healthy Stuff", or even grow (can grow in small areas and this site has some great suggestions) Organic potatoes, carrots, or even throw some onions in the dirt: some things you use alot and can be stored for several months at a time, Just BE CREATIVE! I am 76 years old and so far, am pretty healthy. I have a slight blockage in my heart but the Dr. only gave me a cholesterol drug and a baby asperin to take. I grow as much organic food in my garden as I can and buy organic frozen vegies and fresh. I play tennis at least once a week.
What makes the cut is usually price. Sometimes the item is more than twice the price of conventional and that makes a big difference when you are on a fixed income. I read labels very carefully and do not buy things with artificial colors, perservatives and such.

If organic is within the ball park of the non-organic option, then we do organic. I try to stay away from the dirty dozen - buying those organic only. Some days we change our menu because of the availablility of quality fresh organic produce at a reseaonable price.

If organic wasn't so expensive for certain things, I would be eating organic 24/7. So, I buy organic as much as I possibly can. If not, just making sure I eat mostly fresh and read labels when not. There IS a taste difference btw organic and non-organic. The first time I really noticed when making some switches was with apples and oranges. Might be my taste buds, who knows. There's so much more fresh great flavor in organic. Eating the way mother nature orginally intended is best. Now only if the food industry would agree. This 'dirty dozen' is great to have and be in the know about!

My mom likes shopping for fresh foods. She always tries to buy organic, even if it's a bit more money. She says it tastes better and it's better for the enviornement.
