Carolyn asks: What food “rules” do you follow to stay healthy?


I'm right there with you!

Eating whole foods is the way to go. It's not fat persay that causes problems, it's processed food and stress.

I'm a journalist specializing in farming and local eating. My philosophy is that the move away from an "old time" way of eating is correlated with the move away from small family farms in the US. And all of this is tied together with social and cultural changes that make us unhealthy.

Thanks for this article, but it is very confusing with the warnings against pasta and weight gain.

Ignore "warnings" against foods like pasta and eggs. If you eat foods high in carbs and sit on your sofa every night, then yes, weight gain is inevitable. But if you actually eat the proper portions, do some walking or exercise, you won't have much to worry about.

I am in Italy once a year and can attest to the diet. Eat what you moderation. You'll go nuts trying to keep up with "eat this, don't eat that" fads that frequent our newscasts. Remember when eggs were bad? Now they're back.

When little old European people start dying off because of eating good food and drinking wine, then I'll consider a change! Everything else on the airways is garbage.

I dislike Italian food. All that bread and pasta, and cheese, and tomato sauces. Eek. I like the idea of fish and veggies, and beans, and we eat plenty of it. But pastas and breads... I was starving when I ate them (yes, ONLY the whole-grain variety, never white), and switching to real grains from flour products made a lot of difference for me. And, NO, I was NOT sitting on the sofa, I am excersising at least 60 minutes a day, daily, generally aiming for 2 hours. And I have rigorous portion control. And I was trying to eat 1,400 calories appropriate for my height. And pastas and breads made me super-hungry and made me crave starches and sweets. So, not everything is a fad on the news, I am glad that this particular one started surfacing lately. Otherwise, I would still be going crazy with hunger because I was led to believe that whole-wheat flour products are good for me.

I follow all these rules, I love the feeling that you get when you prepare a fresh and wholesome good for you meal, I also love pasta and I can say that I preapre very good pasta dishes; I love kale so I make sure that it's included on most of my meals and I have converted my family to eat it on regular basis.
Olive oil is the best thing that you can do for your health and I feel so happy that a fresh seafood place just opened in my neighborhood; I stop by and can alway pick seafood at a fraction of the price and
never frozen. Follow the portion rule, fresh and close to nature as you can and keep active and you can
help your body to stay young.

I think you should plan your meals for taste, nutrition and energy! For example, I start out with a healthy breakfast with fruit and grains and sometimes I will have scrambled eggs (no toast!) topped with tomato salsa for a treat! I like to spice it up! It is important to make choices that count. Food eaten must have a purpose. Even snacks can have a purpose. Once you start studying healthy foods, you need to incorporate as many as possible into your regiment. If you are doing this correctly, you will not be hungry. In fact, you will have to be creative to eat all of the differents vitamins and nutrients everyday. Believe it or not, you will be surprised how much better you will feel!

Daily, 2/3 C oatmeal, 1/4 C dried fruit, cooked in 1 C 2% milk...different fruit every day, dried cherries, raisins, chopped dates, chopped dried mixed ftree fruits, tropical fruits, walnuts, pecans, almonds, honey sometimes...pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, almond and vanilla flavors, and a T of soy lecithin!! And I probably forgot some!! Marty

I think the problem for a lot of people is that they don't realize how easy it can be to make your own food. You might have to sacrifice some of your options, and you may not get a biscuit that resembles the Pillsbury variety, but you will be better off for it. There is also something special you give to anyone you feed when you've put your love into it, even if it only took you a few minutes. Look for simple recipes to make things like biscuits, or banana bread; rather than opting for a dessert from the bakery aisle at the grocery store. With some exceptions, I opt for fresh/frozen fruit/veggies over canned. Tomatoes being an exception. I feel like the fresher you can get your food, the better you feel about it. Buy produce at a local farmers' market. Most of us don't have time to spend planning and abiding by a strict and structured diet, so we slack and eat processed foods. Just try taking baby steps, you don't have to graph your caloric intake to be healthier.

In Janurary we changed our diet completely. Our goal is to eat 30 grams of fiber a day. We eat nut butters,crisp breads,nuts, beans,non fat dairy products,lean meats olive and avacado oils, and lots of dark colored vagetables. I have to brag, we have lost 30 lbs,dropped our total cholesterol by 100 points and brought our A1C down to 5.6 ! My husband is 59 and I'm 53. Our #1 rule is to eat healthy for the rest of our lives.
