Hi I'm Dr. Carrie Nelson, a family physician in practice for 20 years. The question of the proper amounts of vitamin D intake and how to measure has created a lot of confusion both among lay people and among physicians. Based upon my study of the conflicting literature on the topic and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report that Marion references, there are some unanswered questions about Vitamin D intake and it's connection to various disease states. However, I have a lot of faith in the IOM and their unbiased process. They tell us that the current state of the science shows that even those of us who live in colder climates are getting enough from our diets and a little bit of sun exposure. I'm sure there's more to come on the whole topic. In the meantime eat a healthy, balanced diet of real foods and get a little bit of sunlight each day (~10-15 minutes)
