Milk pumps our kids full of antibiotics and hormones leading to early puberty and other hormonal effects. Milk depletes more calcium and Vitamin D from the body than it provides, and the sugar content is just the icing on the cake. Let go of the nostalgia of chocolate milk and realize what you're teaching your kids to ingest.

Well It's one thing to add a spoonful of chocolate syrup, is another thing to have it be as highly concentrated as it is in premade chocolate milk.

To me this argument comes down to how we as parents build habits in our children, or vice-versa how our children build habits in us. My family eats very little sugar, we don't have weight problems and we aren't at risk for diabetes or other diet related health issues. All this talk of milk vs. chocolate vs. oxalic acid is just a smoke screen for not engaging with our children. Take the time to explain healthy food to your children, don't bribe them to eat "pseudo-food" by sweetening it with high processed beet juice. Serve food to your children that allow them to experience and find flavors that they like that do not force them later to long for something that is not healthy. I LOVE to eat, fruits, vegetables, and grains. I love this food, I am not a martyr, I don't stare longingly at someone else's cheese blintz as I wolf down my waffles smothered in apple sauce.
You owe it to your kids to help them understand the ramifications of their food choices. If you do, maybe some afternoon your 6-yr old will return from school and announce, as mine did, that she has started a "milk-club" for all those kids who prefer 2% over chocolate. Say what you will about whether milk is healthy or how your oxalic acid is melting your liver, but don't underestimate how much sway you have over your children. Get a back bone, make informed decisions, and teach your kids to do the same.

Sorry to tell ya chocolate is not good. Milk is for cows and you can get your calcium from greens. (says you like kale so I'm guessing you know this) I've heard that the calcium in cows milk is actually harder for the human body to digest, don't kow if it's true but that what I've heard. My argument is not science based it's based on how food actaully makes you feel. Does milk really give anyone energy or does it bloat us out and make us sluggish like cows. Our concepts of nutrition based on scientific reasearch is limited. We say "oh it has vitamins and minerals, it must be good for us." However, cows milk is for calfs. The argument that chocalate is good is rubbish no matter what it is. It is sugar, caffiene and dairy. The antioxidants, blah blah blah...we feed ourselves these lines to support our addictions. We pass this down to our children and our world becomes more and more unhealthy. I feel that people can hardley feel their food anymore. They say "well chocoalte makes me feel OK", but this is because they're numb from a lifetime of bad eating and food addictions. Then we get into everything in moderation, which by the way I will have a slice of cheese 4-5 times a year, but the verdict is still out for me. I am commitied to feeling my food. There is so much propaganda around calcium and milk. The children are brainwashed so young. We have mooved (ha) so far away from our true nature..I'm not saying I'm an absolute authority but I can tell you after my students drink chocolate milk thier crazy little devils. No concentration energy for their activities and you can guarantee a meltdown after the sugar high. They often tell me " a little bit of sugar is OK" and all I answer them is "really?" "Is it really?" A little bit of not good for us is ok. This is the message we send. Sheepishly, they get it! (they have to make their own choices, I know telling them wont' change it) What you suggest as a nutritionist I feel is not quite on, sugar and dairy are not natural food. Clean up your diet (no sugar or milk for three months...none) and then try sugar again..it is a horrible drug, do the same with milk. Feel it, don't take my word for it....Teacher, type one diabetic from age14. That's how I actuallly got off sugar, I had to! I was way too addicted to it to give it up voluntarily. You probably think I'm a pompass ass, well all I can say is what my experience is. Let's cut the crap with the kids... giving into their culturely condtioned taste buds isn't the answer.

All things considered, the debate isn't exactly even settled on whether PLAIN milk of the type that most people drink (mass produced) should be considered a healthy thing to consume. Once you process it further and add chocolate (which is not the good kind of chocolate), it's almost certainly not a healthy drink.
If someone wants to, at home, consume small amounts of chocolate milk and give small amounts to their children, I tend to doubt any serious harm will be done. I believe, however, that the schools are doing the right thing by removing chocolate milk as an option to serve.
Calling it 'soda in drag' is an exaggeration for the sake of making a point I'm sure, but the fact is that merely having a few vitamins and minerals in something doesn't necessarily make it a health food. Chocolate milk is just junk food with a few (very) modest redeeming qualities.
It's extremely disappointing that a nutritionist and a healthy foods website would be pushing such a grossly misinformed idea as to say that cow's milk is necessary for humans, or that the version of it that's commonly served in schools (particularly the chocolate version) should be regarded as healthy.

You must be one of the government-school nutritionists that believe the lines fed to you by the USDA, which is heavily lobbied by the Dairy Assoc, the American Beef Council, and other special interest agriculture groups. Milk is NOT that good for you. The protein bonds in milk tip the acid balance of the blood in favor of not absorbing the calcium present. There are many better sources of calcium out there, which have much higher bio-availability that milk. Although I don't necessarily agree with banning milk, most Americans believe what the media sells them...such as that "milk does a body good", and need a wake-up call. Far too many kids are getting the majority of their calories from the liquids they drinks which usually (including chocolate milk) contain way too much sugar.

Actually, the combination of chocolate and milk is not a good choice as far as the value of the chocolate is negated by the milk.

Chocolate, the dark variety, and not the kind processed using Alkalai, is good, and does not belong in milk, as the milk negates the good qualities of the chocolate. So, by adding chocolate to milk, just to please the little ones, is a bad thing, as it completely confused them and leads the little ones into drinking chocolate milk, just because their mother told them it was good for them. We seriously need to re-address our nutritional knowledge so we can pass the good knowledge on to our children.

I too have always hated milk, and my mom, on advice from my pediatrician, also added chocolate syrup to get me to drink it, As I became a weight conscious adult I stopped drinking milk altogether thinking that the chocolate would make me fat. I am now 56 yrs old, and on weight watchers, and have added low fat chocolate milk back into my diet, along with fat free yogurt and cottage cheese, and other low fat and fat free cheeses, to get some of the calcium and other nutrients that I have been depriving myself of most of my life, I too hope that the proposed ban on flavored milks does a nosedive.
