Our favorite Super Bowl salsas & chips

I like to make salsa at home—it’s simple and I can make it just as I like it: red or green, hot or mild, lots of or little cilantro, with a little fruit thrown in, or simple tomato like this Salsa Rojo recipe. But there are also some great jarred salsas on supermarket shelves, which are handy to have in your refrigerator for a quick appetizer when all your friends decide at the last minute, that they’ll be watching the Super Bowl at your house.

And we all know you can’t have salsa without chips, so with the help of some chip and salsa fanatics, the EatingWell test kitchen cooks sampled mild tomato salsas and tortilla chips to find our favorites.

Here are EatingWell’s favorite chips and salsas:

Desert Pepper Trading Company Salsa Divino
Pros: Good strong flavor, smoky and the fresh vegetable flavor really came through
Cons: None that we found! This was our personal favorite.

Pace Chunky Salsa Mild
Pros: Bright color, rich flavor.
Cons: Some tasters were put off by the amount of tomato, and thought it was a bit too tangy.

Wild Oats Mild
Pros: Great texture that really adds to the overall sweet flavor.
Cons: Some folks didn’t like the darker color or the texture while others thought it was a bit bland.

Others salsas we liked were:
Drew’s Organic Mild
Herdez Salsa Casera Mild
Old El Paso Thick and Chunky Wild for Mild

And for chips...

R.W. Garcia Stone Ground
Pros: Great corn flavor, with an authentic taste.
Cons: None that we found! These were our favorites!

Snyder Restaurant Style
Pros: Good sturdy appearance, nice crunch with a whopping 4 grams of fiber per serving
Cons: A bit oily tasting with a tendency to stick to you teeth.

Guiltless Gourmet Yellow Corn
Pros: A prominent corn flavor
Cons: Some tasters thought the corn flavor was too much—almost fake tasting
