EatingWell’s Summer Challenge: Cook Our July/August Issue and Write About It!

When I first saw Julie & Julia last year, the movie about how Julie Powell cooked and blogged her way through Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking, I loved it. What I didn’t realize at the time was how many EatingWell “Julies” are out there, cooking their way through our magazine and books.
I came across Angela Buraglia of Cedar Park, Texas, on Twitter last spring when she was about to hit 50. Not age 50 (the makeup-artist-turned-software-developer is only 35), but about to make her 50th EatingWell recipe in 90 days, a challenge she set for herself and her fiancé. She started with the EatingWell 500-Calorie Dinners cookbook. Each recipe got a Tweet and a photo on Facebook (now on her blog eatingwithangela.com).
Angela (left) has lost 14 pounds over 16 weeks and a total of 40 pounds in the past year. “When people ask what I’m doing, I say, ‘I’m not dieting, I’m just eating well.’” That’s apparent if you look at the scores of photos she has posted of our recipes, which range from her favorite easy dinner, Turkey & Tomato Panini, to Swirled Cheesecake Brownies (“too good,” she complains).
Since then, I’ve heard from people around the country who share our recipes via social media or just plain old-fashioned supper clubs. Jennifer Leal of Rhode Island started out making EatingWell dinners for friends and now posts recipes for EatingWell Wednesdays on her blog savorthethyme.blogspot.com. Minnesotan Virginia Corbett regularly makes our dishes and writes about them on rootsandzest.blogspot.com.
One of the most inspiring stories is from Tamie Spears (left) of Michigan, who developed hypertension at age 32 after the birth of her first child. Twelve years later, she is still fighting it, but through diet. She blogs about our recipes and her progress at tamiespears.vox.com, and writes: “I had blood pressure readings of 170/120 (last November). My latest readings are 146/93 without any medication and I’m closer to my goal of 120/80. This new way of eating is leading me in the right direction.”
Summer is a time to share successes and our recipes. So bring our healthy Tomato-Corn Pie to a potluck or pack up Grilled Shrimp Skewers from our “Farm-Fresh Picnic” story.
