Why your sugary diet may be putting your health at risk again

Brierley asks: How have you reduced the amount of added sugar you consume?

I really loved to add sugar when I make my own foods.
I always put honey and maple syrup to yogurt, coffee, even in my potato salad.
But I found out honey and maple syrup are also just simple sugar when we have a little amount of them.
Minerals and micronutrients contained in that small amount of alternative sugar are meaningless one study found. Therefore I changed my sugar eating habit from syrups to fruits and less salts. What does it mean? Just blueberries to yogurt which can be fruity sugar, and less salt to chili sauce so I can balance the taste of sugar and salt. If I make sauce saltier, it definitly needs more sugar to balance its taste.
That's it. Very simple way to remove simple white sugars and even alternative sugars-maple syrups and honey. I still canoot avoid ice creams and cookies sometimes my mouth begger me to bite it, I intendly buy more veggie sticks and fruits instead so I can deal my grocery budget to buying less sweets:)

I stopped drinking soda with sugar, and started drinking unsweetened green tea iced with a splash of orange juice instead. Sparkling water with lime is another favorite when I'm craving something bubbly. I think artificial sweeteners are bad news, so I use real sugar, honey or other natural sweetners in smaller amounts when needed in recipes. For a sweet treat, I eat a small square of dark chocolate with unsweetened dried cherries and some almonds. Yummy and loaded with anti-oxidants!

I cut out sugar and lost 15 pounds in 2 months! My cholesterol went down 12 points and so did my blood sugar. I use Stevia, a natural sweetener. Read the ingredients to make sure it doesn't have any additives. Most important: DON'T USE ANY ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS! In fact, don't use anything artificial and avoid processed food, which is loaded with salt, hydrogentated fat, high fructose corn syrup, and preservatives. If you cook from scratch, you know what's in it. Easiest weight I've ever lost, BUT give me a piece of home-made strawberry-rhubarb pie, and I'm eatin' it!

Went to the doctor, said blood sugar was a little high, to be on safe side go on a 1600 calorie diabetic diet to try to reduce it, also had high chlorest. From that day on, I have not had a can of regular pop, used to drink at least 2 a day, sometimes more, haven't had cookies, and I put splenda in my coffeee instead of the 2 sugars I did before. Have not had it tested again yet, next week, I am nervous and hope that what I have done will do the trick.

Reducing sugars was simple for me. I do not eat sweets, do not drink soda, I do not add it to my coffee or to my tea. If I want something sweet tasting, I use real maple syrup,, and at that price you use small amounts ! If I am out with friends at a speciality coffee shop,, I will let my hair down,, but get something artificially sweetened (splenda),,,, without the whipped cream..
At first it was not easy,, but it got a lot easier as time went on. It really is a mind set. I enjoy fruits as my sweets. Like a pink lady apple !!! ... I feel better for all of my efforts.. and at age 54, my blood sugar levels are pretty dang good !

In the 70's I read the book "Sugar Blues" by William Duffy, eliminated any form of processed sugar from my diet and have maintained a high level of wellness. Now the main stream of thought is to reduce the intake. I still recommend that you eliminate it in all forms including your favorite wine or beer if you want to loose that pouch, increase your energy, and maximize the healing qualities of your human system.
