It's wonderful to get tips and success stories, it really helps to motivate those who really need to lose a significant amount of weight -- but although some of the healthier diets are great they are not right for everyone. For instance, I do not process sugar as well as my husband, and he does not process fat as well. Listen to your own body, because just following a diet like the Atkins (random selection here) does not necessarily mean it will be healthy for YOU.

I live in china. I have been looking at the chinese diet and how they eat everything. There are no Fad diets here. There are few and far between fat people here. The ones who are fat are extremely fit and healthy. The biggest thing I noticed here is that these people eat Everything fresh ! Processed and dated foods are not really liked among most chinese. Ive been trying to research and link the fact that these people eat fresh things all the time linked with seasonal items. They tend to eat whats in season. By eating everything and eating seasonally for the last year. I have lost weight, and have no acne anymore. I eat more now than I ever ate in america, and I once was a fast food boy. I feel like a dog because I cant pass up a meal by a street vendor even if its insects.

I totally agree with the people that are for Atkins!!! It works. I know first hand. My husband and I are doing great. No more processed foods and white flour and sugar at our house anymore.
You can't just lose all the weight and expect to go back to eating garbage and keep it off.
I know a lot of people that think they're doing Atkins, but they aren't following it properly. You truly do need to read the book from cover to cover to understand.
"The package says it's low carb".....that's not Atkins.
"There's only a little sugar in it"......that's not Atkins.
"It's low calorie".......again.....that's not Atkins.
It's not about going to McDonald's every day and ordering a bunch of double cheeseburgers without ketchup and the bun. A lot of people think that this is okay. The only thing at McDonald's that's good for you are the napkins.
When you do the research and actually read the book you learn about the food you're eating and what it does to your body. Both my husband and I feel awesome, and I can't imagine going back to where we were at before. We've got so much more energy now, and are so much happier.
Atkins educates you on what you're eating. If you're just about losing weight, then yes...you'll gain it all back. It's about a lifestyle change. What you were doing before obviously made you fat and unhealthy. So, I think it's pretty obvious that if you diet, lose the weight, and go back to your old habits...you're going to be fat again.
I like the person that said that fads don't last 40 years. Atkins has been around for a long time. It's about not eating processed foods. I grocery shop around the parameter of the grocery store. Produce, dairy, and meats. It's about clean eating. It's not like Nutrisystem where you hit your goal weight and then try to sustain it without specialized foods. It's about teaching you how to eat, and teaching you what the things you eat do to your body.
My husband is in his 30's and he was never taught how to eat well. Now....after educating himself, he can't believe he went this long without knowing what he was doing to his body with all of those preservatives and all of that sugar.
I can't even begine to tell you how extremely healthy this is for you, and my husband's doctor will vouche for it as well.

Anyone who says Atkins is a fad diet and promotes cheeseburgers and bacon has obviously not read the book-the WHOLE book. By the time you get finished with the strict two week induction phase, it looks much like any "healthy diet" you might read about in most fitness articles and diet books, except for the lack of 100 calorie packs, fake fats, fake sugars, fake eggs, fake.... I eat yogurt, berries, nuts, seeds, whole grains, lean protien, dairy and lots of vegetables. You know, REAL food! Read the book folks. Then judge this forty year FAD!

The Adkins diet is NOT healthy, nor is a diet that contains 30% of calories from fat. The process of ketosis is where the body starts using muscle tissue for energy. Our body needs complex carbs for energy and our brain functions solely on carbohydrates. That's why people on the Adkins diets felt tired and sluggish.
Please read The China Study by T Colin Campbell. The rate of disease rates climbed as the % of calories from animal protein increased. Physicians such as Neal Barnard, Caldwell Esselstyn and John McDougall reversed type 2 diabetes and heart disease/blocked arteries with a low-fat vegan diet. These people needed to be vegans in order to survive their disease.
Diet should be considered a way of life, not something to do temporarily to lose weight. Eat a diet rich in fruits, veggies, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, keeping animal protein consumption to 10-15% for OPTIMAL health. Use that animal protein sparingly, like a side-dish or as a flavoring for soups and stews. Drink lots of filtered water, reduce stress and get plenty of sleep. When you eat for health, and exercise for health, your weight settles where it should be.
And use lots of eatingwell.com recipes. I recommend the Quinoa and spinach salad recipe as well as the Skillet Gnocci, oh, and Edemame Stew...can't forget that one. Absolutely yummy. Good luck to all.

I have a friend who is following Caldwell Esselstyn's vegan diet, which is fine, but the diet specifies no oil of any kind. Dr. Esselstyn claims that this diet can prevent and reverse heart disease. This "no oil" diet contradicts everything I know about good fats and the essential fatty acids we need to eat because our bodies can't synthesize them. Fat is also essential to the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and cancer-fighting phytochemicals. The Mediterranean people have been eating foods with olive oil and the incidence of cardiovascular disease among this population is actually quite low. Can you comment?

Honestly, this is ridiculous. I don't know why people think there is some magic way to lose weight. I lost 63 pounds over 4 years ago, and haven't gained an ounce back, just by cutting down and exercising. Everyone wants a quick fix, but the truth is that losing weight takes dedication. I eat a very healthy, well balanced diet, and exercise (even if it's just walking) for around twenty minutes to a half hour five times a week. I still eat fattening things when I want them, I just don't eat large amounts of them. Cutting any major component of nutrition out of your diet is NOT healthy. My mom lost 50 pounds fast on Atkins, and you know what? She gained every single pound of it back even faster than she lost it. You cannot eat that way forever, and once you start introducing carbs back into your diet - the weight comes back in the blink of an eye. Things like Atkins and Nutrisystem are not practical, you'll never be able to go back to normal eating and keep the weight off. Losing weight, and keeping that weight off is a lifestyle change. If you can't stick to it to some degree permanently, the weight will come back.

Açai has been touted as being a fantastic diet food, low on natural sugars and no fats. If you take supplements each day, you will supposedly lose weight over time and improve your overall health because of all the rich antioxidants (especially from the good açai supplements, the freeze-dried kind) . I tried it for 3 months but did not lose any weight. I stopped because all that fruit was too much for me in the mornings sugar-wise and later on in the day it was too filling... i am losing weight now with protein supplement soups and bars and salads and one filling meal a day, and once i reach my ideal weight i think i would re-incorporate the açai as a snack mid-afternoon.
