I think you need something wet so the topping will stick on and so it's not so dry that it chokes you going down. I've been using half butter and half Earth Balance so I don't feel so guilty. My favorite topping is garlic salt and nutritional yeast.

I use olive oil exclusively to cook popcorn. No margerine or butter needed. I sprinkle on a little salt toss it in the bowl, then have fun eating a very good snack which has far fewer calories than any other snack food save for carrots.
I hav't eaten microwave popcorn in years. I can't stand the smell of the chemicals as they cook. Besides it tastes artificial and greasy.
The Splenda with cinnamon sounds good. I will try that soon.

I use a "Whirley-Pop" and pop my popcorn in coconut oil...1/3 C. unpopped organic yellow kernels to 1 T. coconut oil...then mist the popped corn with olive oil I keep in a spray bottle and toss it with garlic salt and nutritional yeast...sometimes I use real butter, but only occasionally....I make my "standard" popcorn at least 3 times/week...sometimes a big batch (1/2 C. unpopped) is dinner....

I actually pop my popcorn in a paper bag in the microwave! I add a little bit of oil but it's so easy and simple. I like to sprinkle some chili powder and Knorr seasoning on it. yummy!!

Hands down, fresh squeezed lemon juice! Plain old lemon juice and bare naked popcorn really does it for me. :)

I pop the corn with olive oil and then drizzle olive oil and finely grated parmesan cheese and sea salt! YUM!
