In a report likely to send shock waves through the dietary supplement industry, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released new Dietary Reference Intakes for vitamin D and calcium. The report summary (PDF) says Americans are getting all the vitamin D and calcium we need, and we do not need more:

The holidays are here and with them come a multitude of parties—some that we're psyched about, some that we're obligated to attend. All of them, no doubt, will have a buffet table packed with delicious holiday treats: mini quiches, Swedish meatballs, the dozens of clever ways people devise to stuff cream cheese into pastry puffs, elaborate chocolate confections and spiced buttery baked goods.

Last week I was watching a cooking segment on TV, when the anchor suspiciously questioned the chef about how much heavy cream she was putting into the recipe. The chef replied gleefully, “It’s the holidays!” As much as I hate to say this (hello...I’m the nutrition editor for a healthy food magazine), she kind of has a point. Healthy eating just isn’t as cool during the holidays as it is other times of year (um, January!). Gluttonous temptations lurk everywhere.

So before you embark on your calendar full of social events that revolve around eating and drinking, arm yourself with these stay-slim strategies.

It’s time for my annual holiday cookie swap. I had so much success with my 100-calorie cookie platter last year that I decided to try the challenge again this year.
