I was late for my plane over the holidays but that didn’t keep me from taking a few extra minutes to place my order. I was standing at the Dunkin’ Donuts counter in JFK, weighing two numbers: 2.16 and 510. Which one do you think was the number of calories in the muffin?
The first was the price of a muffin in dollars. The second, the cost of the muffin in calories. Could just seeing those two numbers propel me to count my calories in the same way I might count my pennies? (Find our top 5 picks for healthy foods at the airport.) According to the authors of the Health Care Reform Bill, the answer is yes — so much so that more than 200,000 fast food outlets (as well as...read full post »
I’m getting ready for Week 3 of my 500-calorie dinner challenge where I’m cooking 500-calorie dinners from new book, EatingWell 500-Calorie Dinners, 5 nights a week for 5 weeks. The recipes I’ve been making for Week 2 have been going smoothly (and deliciously). I think my secret to success this week has again been planning ahead. (It’s one of the...read full post »
If you’re the kind of person who loves chocolate (or fill in the blank with your favorite treat), but bans it whenever you’re trying to lose weight, you might be making a big mistake. As a nutritionist who’s helped hundreds of people lose weight, I’ve noticed time and again that when people try to be “too good” they’re most likely to fall off the weight-loss wagon. Dieting isn’t about depriving yourself of everything you love—it’s just about eating fewer calories than you’re burning (calculate your daily calorie goal here)—a situation that can indeed be delicious. And a situation that most certainly can include dessert.

I was well into my first week of cooking and eating 500-calorie dinners five nights a week as part of our 500-Calorie Dinner Challenge when I realized: cooking meals to help you lose weight is all about making it work for you. My challenge? I’m just too busy. Last week I was in Philadelphia to go on QVC to sell our new EatingWell 500-Calorie Dinners book, and the next morning I was back in the office in Vermont at 7 a.m. to start doing radio interviews for the book. Needless to say, things are...read full post »
I’ve never been able to diet. I can’t do it because I enjoy eating too much. (And since I’m a food editor, it is a hazard of the job!) Plus I never want to feel like I’m depriving myself. But like most people, I have a few extra pounds around my middle that I can’t wait to trim.
My answer: delicious 500-calorie dinners. Why 500? Most people can lose weight eating 1,500 calories a day. So if you keep your calories to 1,000 for the rest of the day, you can have 500 for dinner. (Check out this example of how much food you can eat for 1,500 calories...read full post »
