New York City is serious about trying to reduce rates of obesity and the expensive and debilitating conditions for which obesity raises risks. Its latest move? It is asking the USDA for a food stamp waiver for two years during which recipients would not be allowed to use their benefit cards to buy sodas.

Nestlé, the world's largest food company (no relation) has conducted periodic studies of infant feeding practices since 2002, no doubt to encourage sales of its Gerber products. The surveys—FITS (Feeding Infants and Nutrition) Studies—invariably show that Gerber baby foods would be better for babies than what they currently are fed.
The latest FITS results, says the Nestlé press release, "are startling."
• One-third of toddlers and 50 percent of preschoolers eat fast food at least once a week.
• One-quarter of families eat dinner together four or fewer nights each week.
• Half of two-year-olds and 60 percent of three-year-olds watch more than one hour of television each day.

I’m a big believer that Thanksgiving is not a day to diet. Once a year, you get to gather ’round the table with family and friends, count your blessings and eat delicious holiday dishes to your heart’s content. (Find healthier takes for your favorite classic Thanksgiving recipes that will save you 1,273 calories—and you'll never taste the difference.)
I’m not saying you should go nuts and have three servings of turkey, four different types of potatoes and two slices of pie with double the whipped cream. But I do think that you should definitely go ahead and eat a little of everything you like.

You may only know about probiotics (the so-called “good” bacteria that’s best known for being added to yogurt) from watching actress Jamie Lee Curtis tell all of America in a commercial that she regulates her digestion with a probiotic yogurt.

I love so many things about fall: apples, squash, hearty soups...and Pumpkin Spice Lattes from Starbucks. I’m sure that part of the appeal is that I can only get them at this time of year. (I like to eat in-season, what can I say?)
I can’t deny that they’re simply delicious: spicy and yet oh-so-sweet—so sweet, in fact, that I knew they couldn’t be low-cal. But I had no idea how shockingly high the actual calorie count of this seasonal sip can be if you order it in its full glory. I’m not talking a 20-ounce venti, just a pedestrian grande (16 oz.) with whole milk and whipped cream. The “grande” total: 410 calories, 17 grams of fat, 10 grams of saturated fat, 48 grams of sugars.
