On a cold, rainy, early spring day last March, assistant food editor Hilary Meyer and I were testing recipes in the EatingWell Test Kitchen. Conversation segued into Whine Fest 2010 about our gardening prospects for the upcoming season—I had moved into a new apartment that didn’t have any space to garden and she was sick of trying to coax tomatoes and other sun-loving plants from her decidedly shady garden. Then, a eureka moment: there was plenty of flat, sunny, open land right next to our office. Why not plant a garden there?

If you’re like many women, I’m going to venture a guess that you fall off the healthy-eating bandwagon once every, say, 28 days, give or take a few. Am I right? You know what I mean. PMS cravings. Even my super-clean-eating friend told me, “I’m not big on food cravings, but that’s the only way I know that I’m PMS-ing.” Ain’t that the truth. As I write this blog, I’m working my way through a bowl of spicy baked cheese puffs and waiting for Aunt Flo’s monthly visit.

My cousin lives in New Orleans and just about every year my husband, Dan, and I talk about heading down there for Mardi Gras. For some reason we can’t seem to get it together enough to actually make it happen. But we still like to celebrate, so we invite a few friends over for a no-fuss Fat Tuesday celebration.
