I love biting into a wedge of sweet summer watermelon and letting the juice dribble down my chin. (I’ve been known to compete in seed-spitting contests with my friends, too.)
As enjoyable as that is, watermelon can be even more delicious when it’s prepared in unexpected ways—with a little fanfare added. I once devoured a bowlful of Watermelon Salsa by myself…in one sitting. I also love watermelon in sweet treats, like frosty beverages and creamy-frozen desserts.

One of my favorite summer activities is berry picking, particularly blueberry picking (best summer fruit EVER!). A local blueberry farm has live music two nights a week, so my friends and I go to picnic and pick berries. We’re there for a few hours, and I always manage to pick way too many blueberries (even though I employ the “put-5-in-the-basket, put-handful-in-mouth” strategy).

I have a confession to make: I’m addicted to summer sweet corn. And living in Vermont, the season starts much too late and ends much earlier than I’d like. When corn season hits, I’m the first in line at my favorite corn farmer’s stand at the farmers’ market. I also stop at a farmstand on my way home from work when I see the plump, bright green husks piled on the table. (You might even say I brake for corn.)

My poor husband. He grew up in a family full of sweet tooths, a family who always ate dessert after dinner. I, on the other hand, was raised by a mother who always had a bag of Cheetos stashed in the corner cupboard and a father who is psyched when he can get a cheese plate for dessert when we go out to dinner.
So when we first moved in together I was just plain confused when I’d watch him root around the cabinets looking for something sweet after dinner. Dessert? Every night? Really?

The idea of making jam used to freak me out a bit. (They didn’t exactly teach us how to make jam from scratch in culinary school.) A few years ago I decided it was time to overcome my fear. Luckily, my friend had already made a batch that summer, so I had someone to hold my hand through the process.
