My BFF Jessica e-mailed me yesterday: she and her husband are trying to lose weight. To make their resolution a reality, Jessica decided she’s going to change what she makes for dinner, so she asked me for quick, healthy dinner recipes they can learn to make this year to eat healthier.

I love throwing parties. It’s a great way to get all of my friends together without all of us ringing up a hefty bar tab at our favorite watering hole. (Plus, we can listen to music we like!) The key to being the hostess with the mostest is being armed with some ridiculously simple crowd-pleasing appetizer recipes that come together in minutes. I am a graduate of a university that is almost always near the top of the lists of binge-drinking schools. Needless to say, I’ve had my share of hangovers. and I’ve tried my share of hangover cures to help me get to class. I come from a long line of holiday-cookie bakers. My great-grandma baked oodles of cookies each year for the grand cookie platter that served as the only dessert on Christmas Day. My mom started her own cookie-baking tradition when she got married 30-plus years ago. On Thanksgiving weekend we’d pick out all the holiday cookie recipes she was going to make and then for weeks she baked one kind of cookie a day. She hit her peak when my sister, Jennie, and I were kids, baking 1,000 cookies or more each holiday season, at least 100 of each variety. Crazy, huh?

Even though I’m not Jewish, I have a soft spot for Jewish cuisine. I learned to love matzo ball soup and knish when I waited tables at a deli in college, but my real Jewish-food obsession is latkes.
I love fried foods and think it’s pretty neat that they’re served during Hanukkah to celebrate the miraculous way that one day’s worth of consecrated olive oil kept the Jerusalem temple lamp burning for eight days.
