I have a confession to make: I never liked sweet potatoes growing up. It wasn’t until I was working as an assistant in a cooking school many years later that I decided to give them a try again. The sweet potatoes were roasted until caramelized, which intensified their sweetness without making them cloying and fake. That super-simple preparation hooked me on sweet potatoes!

There are always two kinds of pie at my family’s Thanksgiving dinner: pumpkin and apple. If I had to choose the one kitchen appliance I couldn’t live without, it would definitely be my slow cooker. I turn to it on the busiest days to prepare a healthy meal when I don’t have the time to—I can fill it in the morning with some staples like beans, broth, whole grains and whatever vegetables I have on hand, and arrive home to a hearty meal that’s ready to eat.

Thanksgiving is hands down my favorite holiday. I love it so much that we not only spend the big day with our family, we also host a Thanksgiving party for our friends the weekend before the real deal so we can have that yummy meal two times each year.

I was at my mother-in-law's last weekend and she made an amazing apple crisp for dessert one night. Mmmmmm, apple crisp! I don't have much of a sweet tooth, but when fall comes around, I start craving apple crisp, apple pie, apple bars—pretty much any kind of apple dessert.
