I’ve discovered how to make casual summer entertaining super-easy and infinitely more fun: I simply plug in my slow cooker. I used to spend all day making side dishes and sweating for hours at the grill, not realizing until the end of the party that the only time I interacted with anyone was when they came to get a burger from me.

Now I let my slow cooker do most of the work. If I’m having what feels like the whole neighborhood over, I can free up space on my packed grill by using this handy tool to make one of the main courses. Who doesn’t love fork-tender brisket piled on a sandwich and topped with pickles and garlicky mayo or chicken drumsticks coated in sticky honey-orange sauce? I can also use the slow cooker to prepare great sides like a tangy, warm German potato salad starring fresh fingerling potatoes or Quinoa-Summer Squash Casserole....

Between my community-supported agriculture share and my small container-gardening project, I have enough salad greens to feed a small army. Luckily, my husband and I love digging into salads for dinner. And not just as a starter or a side dish, but as our main meal. I really love the whole experience of making coffee: the aroma of a freshly brewed pot wafting through my house, the smell of it as I raise a cup to my lips, the warmth of it filling my body and the flavor—oh, the flavor!

I’m more of a cook than a baker. So while I have an arsenal of dried herbs and spices and savory condiments, my baking cupboard is slightly more bare. Since I don’t keep tabs on what’s in there, there have been times that I’ve realized that I’m missing a ingredient or two after I’ve already embarked on a baking project.
