According to a press release, the new bar is "a frozen, creamy nut bar made from nutrient-dense almonds, layered with smooth dark chocolate and sea salt." So far it only comes in one flavor: Dark Chocolate Almond Sea Salt. (Its ingredients include almonds, water, tapioca syrup, sugar, chocolate, coconut oil, cocoa and peanut butters, milkfat, among others, that together add up to 11 grams of sugar and 190 calories per bar.)
We tried it and were surprised at how much we loved the flavor. It reminded us of a Snickers Ice Cream bar—nutty, chocolatey and a little bit sweet. Instead of milk chocolate, peanuts and caramel you get a dark chocolate coating, almonds and sea salt. The frozen part of the bar is what sets it apart from other shelf-stable KIND bars you may be used to. Rather than being super crunchy, the base is a creamy almond filling, which tastes just like almond ice cream. Almonds add crunch and the chocolate coating is just the right amount. Our whole team of editors (including two registered dietitians) were very impressed.
The nutrition stats for a frozen treat are impressive too. Only 10 grams of added sugar, 4 grams of protein, 2 grams of fiber and just under 200 calories. Plus, the bar is portion controlled for you. As for how they compare to a Snickers Ice Cream bar—you'll save 4 grams of sugar, 2.5 grams of saturated fat and the KIND bar has a slight edge on protein and fiber. The new frozen treat is also free of artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols, which often pop up in "healthier" ice creams. It does contain milkfat and is processed on equipment where gluten is processed, so if you're strictly gluten free or dairy free these may not be the bars for you.
KIND Frozen bars are currently available in one-serving single bars or six-serving packs at select Walmart stores. (It's not yet available for purchase online, though you can view the products on Walmart's website.)
"KIND has had ambitions to disrupt the frozen category—along with other categories across the grocery store—for years," Laura Merritt, vice president of innovation at KIND, told EatingWell. "Like all KIND products, it adheres to the KIND Promise as it leads with a nutrient-dense first ingredient: almonds. The frozen snack aisle is not only a natural place to extend, but it is also ripe for improvement as people seek more offerings with premium ingredients." She noted that KIND intends to enter other snack categories in the future.
"Given our fans' love for our best-selling offering, Dark Chocolate Nuts & Sea Salt, we're particularly excited to introduce a similar flavor profile in a new format—which is exactly what we've done with KIND Frozen," says Merritt. "We're thrilled that KIND Frozen upholds our brand's promise and is consistent with how we've always entered new categories—with an eye to creatively elevate people's overall experience."
While this frozen snack might not be the perfect bar to take on a hike, it fills other needs of KIND customers, Merritt says. "This new offering fills a need for people seeking an indulgent treat that tastes delicious, but is only 190 calories and features nutrient-dense almonds," she tells EatingWell.
KIND protein bars have long been a snack we've suggested you stash in your desk—and its new frozen option may just be one you'll want to store in your freezer.
