How diabetes and obesity are developing in tandem into a new epidemic: diabesity.
Obesity can make cells less able to use insulin to bring sugar in from the bloodstream (insulin resistance), the first step toward diabetes, but diabesity expert Mark Hyman, M.D., thinks the reverse is also true—that insulin resistance may lead to weight gain. One in two Americans could have diabetes or prediabetes and 75% could be overweight or obese by 2020.
