It’s almost the weekend and I’m already thinking about dessert—specifically brownies.

Yes, I could make brownies from a box (we’ve all done it, I know there’s nothing to be ashamed of.) But when I’m cooking for friends, I like to bring something homemade to the table, maybe on the healthier side, and definitely something people will love.

These 4 healthy brownie recipes from my favorite cooks in the EatingWell Test Kitchen fit the bill perfectly (a few are even low-cal!). The Swirled Cheesecake Brownies are made with whole-grain whole-wheat flour, reduced-fat cream cheese, coffee to boost flavor and just one egg plus egg whites to cut fat. The out-of-this-world Rocky Road Brownies are packed with intense flavor and cut into moderate pieces to keep the calorie count in check but still deliver a satisfying treat. Canola oil replaces butter in the Dark Fudgy Brownies, while applesauce is the secret ingredient, replacing much of the butter, in our Double Chocolate Brownies, which are also made with whole-grain whole-wheat flour.
