Got kids? Add these 10 healthier foods to your shopping list

I was so excited when I heard about First Lady Michelle Obama’s new campaign to fight childhood obesity, called Let’s Move. As a mom, it’s easy for me to get behind any effort to help our kids be healthier. I know how hard it can be for parents and kids to eat healthfully in a world filled with busy schedules, a proliferation of unhealthy convenient food choices and picky eaters.
So while this new initiative will bring help for kids and parents, there are some things we can start right now at home, tonight, to keep our families healthier.
One of my favorite things about Michelle Obama’s plan is that she’s emphasizing how small dietary changes can make a big health difference. It’s so true. No foods need to be off limits, including our favorite comfort foods like mac and cheese, which are easy to make healthier. (See our recipe for a healthier, yummy mac and cheese.) But having healthy foods in your house, so that it’s easy to make better choices, is essential.
It all starts at the store, with the items you choose to buy and bring home for your family to eat. Here are 10 kid-friendly foods you should have on your shopping list:
• Fruits and vegetables that can be eaten in bite-size pieces, such as orange sections, grapes, pineapple chunks, baby carrots and grape tomatoes
• Frozen vegetables, such as edamame (soybeans), peas and broccoli
• Assorted dried fruit, such as apricots, cranberries or raisins, to use in a trail mix
• Nuts, such as walnuts, almonds and dry-roasted unsalted peanuts, to use in a trail mix
• Their favorite dressing for dipping
• Low-fat or nonfat vanilla yogurt
• Reduced-fat cheeses, such as Cheddar cheese and string cheese
• Whole-wheat pasta
• Eggs (Keep them on hand for fast omelets or egg salad.)
• Whole-wheat crackers
